Join multiple international award winning photographer Jim Welninski for 2 intensive days of study in the art and craft of creating fine art architectural photographs. This type of photography is about more than what you see in front of you. It’s about the experience of your encounter with the structure you are photographing and translating that experience into a photograph.
On the first day, we’ll meet in Downtown Chicago to spend the day photographing many of the architectural wonders of the city.
You’ll learn what makes a great architectural photograph and how best to capture the character of the buildings. We’ll visit many familiar sites, but you’ll learn to see them in a different way. We’ll consider light, form, volume, and vision and how these things affect our choices in the field. The photographs you come away with will be unique and have strong emotional content. On day two, we’ll meet in the lab to use Lightroom and Photoshop for exploring processing methods that will bring your vision to life. You’ll learn how to prepare a RAW file for processing, how to create light where none existed before, and how to direct the viewer’s eye according to your vision. You’ll take your photograph from a RAW file to completion with plenty of help from one of the best fine art architectural photographers in the world.
This is a rain or shine event. Don’t worry about rain or bad weather. Remember that bad weather equals good photography. You’ll get great images even if the lighting is flat and you’ll learn that sometimes that’s the best way to shoot architecture.
• Must have completed Photo 2 or obtain permission to take the class.
• A DSLR and a sturdy tripod for use in certain situations.
• A wide angle lens and at least a mid-range zoom lens. Ideal coverage would be from about 16mm to about 200mm.
• Although this isn’t a long exposure workshop, if you have neutral density filters and want to learn how to use them properly, bring them along. If enough attendees have them, we can shoot a long exposure or two.
There will be communication with the instructor before the class about particulars. For more about Jim Welninski and his work visit www.alteredspacephoto.com/.
