How much will the class cost?

There was time when Richard liked to say, "You don't need a thousand dollar camera to take a thousand dollar picture."

Well, that was before DSLRs. The cost of cameras is through the roof and we're in a recession! Don't worry; there's good news ahead. Because we're not located in a high-rent district and don't have a building that costs so much to keep up, we don't have to charge sooo much for our classes.

In fact, we're able to offer our classes for 25 percent less than anywhere else on the North Side. Bottom line: The seven-week class costs $330, with another $70 for the lab fee. Total cost: $400.

How much of my time is this class going to take each week?

Each student may attend the first class at no charge. Payment is by check or cash only, due at the start of the second class.

Richard Stromberg's Chicago Photography Classes are for people who are serious about learning photography. When you enroll in Photo I, you are agreeing to be part of a program and a community, and that will take about eight hours of your time each week for seven weeks.

Classes start at 7:00pm sharp. At the second class you will sign up for Lab time. The lab will take three hours of your time every week. You'll spend the rest of your time during the week shooting your assignment. There are seven assignments, one each week starting with Week One. You will be expected to take your own notes at each class and Lab. Each student is expected to be in the building twice a week, once for class and once for Lab.

How large are the classes?

Unlike other schools Richard's years of teaching experience has taught him that small classes are a better learning environment.

Please Note: Because it is our policy that each person may take the first Photo I class at no charge, the first class is often large. After the first class some people find that work or school may not allow them to take the class or they may not have the time. We prefer that students are fully informed before they commit to our exacting curricula.

What Photo I classes are... and are not

Our dress code is casual. Showing up in office clothes is OK; the most important thing is to be comfortable. Most of the teachers, most of the time, will be in jeans.

Richard Stromberg's Chicago Photography Classes prides itself on maintaining spaces for people to work in, and to be creative. If you show up wearing white gloves and check out the top of the doors, you will be very disappointed. (But we don't want to disappoint anyone, so please leave the gloves at home.)

Richard Stromberg's Chicago Photography Classes are not corporate training sessions. There will be no china coffee cups and spread of jellyrolls and donuts. There will be no PowerPoint presentations with corresponding booklets so you don't really have to pay attention. No 20-minute breaks that somehow stretch to a half hour or more.

In class you have to pay attention and listen to the instructor, and to other class members. You have to take notes at every class, and at each lab. You have to take charge of your own learning, and if you don't understand something you have to ask questions, sometimes in front of everyone in the class. You may always ask the instructor to check your notes.

Like we said, you're not expected to be perfect or to know everything. You are expected to try, to work, to the best of your ability, every week and on weekends. Remember there are no stupid questions, only stupid teachers. It is our job to make sure you "get it." If you don't get it, then get us, and let us know.

Sense of humor is a course requirement. We especially enjoy off beat, politically incorrect, not-ready-for-prime-time humor. Keep things in perspective, and remember that no one ever died because of a bad photograph. To be truthful, physically some people have suffered very bad stomach aches from bad art, but no one ever really got hurt.
