Street photography captures raw moments and unexpected beauty—this class teaches you how to own that power. You’ll move beyond snapshots and toward creating work that feels atmospheric, honest, and deeply personal.

This immersive 7‑week class invites experienced street photographers to elevate their work through advanced techniques and deeper narrative exploration. Building on foundational skills, this course emphasizes mood, mystery, imperfection, and the art of visual storytelling. You’ll study seminal photographers and bring their insights to life during instructor led class shoots throughout Chicago.

Course Structure

Each week alternates between in-depth lectures and guided street shoots:

Weeks 1, 3, 5, 7 (Lecture)

  • Explore advanced themes: atmosphere & grit, fleeting moments, visual mystery, and sequencing
  • Study inspiring photographers from diverse backgrounds, each offering unique approaches

Weeks 2, 4, 6 (Photo Walks)

  • Apply lecture concepts during 2–3 hour group shoots in Chicago
  • Build skills and share feedback in small-group critique after each session

By the end of this course, students will:

  • Grasp advanced techniques including things like the use of grain, blur, shadow, abstraction, and highlighting emotional tone
  • Shoot with confidence and narrative awareness
  • Build and sequence a cohesive 8–12 image series
  • Receive insightful critique and peer feedback
  • Develop a stronger personal vision and a polished mini‑portfolio or project

 

Who Should Enroll

Ideal for photographers who:

  • Are familiar with basic street photography through previous classes or experience (must have completed Intro to Street Photography or have permission from the instructor).
  • Are ready to push creative boundaries—embracing blur, shadow, abstraction, and atmosphere
  • Want to explore more personal, narrative-focused work
  • Are comfortable with classroom critique and working in urban environments
