Get To Know John Granata

John Granata is a photographer who prefers to remain behind the camera rather than becoming the subject of his own work. With 35 years of experience, he seeks to capture the “1,000 words” each photograph holds. Throughout countless conversations with visitors and customers at shows across the country, he emphasizes that the essence of his art lies in the experience of taking the pictures. Whether it’s the exhilaration of swimming with a humpback whale, exploring an abandoned building, or discovering inspiration behind a garage, John remains captivated by the spontaneous moments that unfold before him.

Though many have urged him to concentrate on a single subject, he thrives on the diversity of his experiences, capturing whatever piques his interest in that decisive moment. His work is ever evolving yet unmistakably embodies his signature style. For John, printing an image is akin to sending a postcard from his life—a cherished memory that he often shares as thank-you cards with those who spend time with him.

Six years ago, John began teaching printing at Chicago Photography Classes, where he found a true sense of belonging within the vibrant community. After years of focusing on printing, he introduced a color series and is now excited to add five new classes in 2025, eager to see where this new direction will lead him.

  • Where and when did photography start for you?
    • I was 14 years old and my grandfather gave me 20 rolls of 110 film when I went to Italy. He asked me to show him a place where he was not able to go.

  • How long have you been at CPC?
    • I have been teaching at CPC since 2018.

  • Favorite genre of photography outside of your specialty of fine art?
    • I don’t know, I love the story telling of it all. The emotional connection. It might be disgust or wonder, but anything that snaps me out of my own vision.

  • Your biggest challenge as a photographer?
    • Focus on a technical level. On a bigger scale, not throwing out my work. I tend to enjoy the process, but don’t care much for the results.

  • Name one rule of photography that you like to break?
    • All of them at different points. I really believe you have to know the rules in order to break the rules. The rules embed in your subconscious and it is a struggle to not do what you are supposed to do.

  • Proudest photography moment so far?
    • Knowing when to put the camera down and enjoying what is in front of me.

  • Photography pet peeve?
    • AI and photographers who think they have the right to do something, because they want to do something.

  • Little known fact about you?
    • I have used cameras and lenses that you can’t even find in photo history books.

  • Favorite way to spend your free time (that is not photography)?
    • There is life without a camera?

  • Favorite music to listen to (genre or group)? Are you into live music or just listening to recorded music??
    • I love live music and have been to several hundred concerts.

  • Favorite “get you out of a funk” song?
    • It’s all about perspective. If you are up, you generally look down on something or someone. I prefer that romantic/respectful perspective. I think a lot of art comes from being in a “funk”.

  • Favorite cuisine or food?
