Porcupine Mountains Photo Retreat

September 22nd – 26th, Attendees arrive Sep 22nd, depart morning of Sep 26th

From blazing autumn leaves to waterfalls and mossy streams in old growth forests along the rocky shores of Lake Superior, we will explore and photograph the last great wilderness in the midwest.

Be inspired and capture the beauty of the Porcupine Mountains.  Each day will be a photography adventure was we go into the field, learn and shoot.  Join instructors Nick Sinnott and Gerri Whitley to learn new techniques in small group, hands-on field excursions.  We will share our work in image reviews and some post processing sessions.  During the retreat you will learn techniques, try them and get feedback on your work.  Anyone interested in photography and with a passion for the outdoors will benefit from this retreat.

Itinerary

Thursday, September 22nd:  Arrival

Participants arrive at our lodging after 4pm

Group Dinner

If the weather permits, we will do some night and/or astro photography.

 

Friday, September 23rd to Sunday, September 25th:

We will structure our days according to the weather and conditions to maximize our photo opportunities and variety.  If the weather permits, we will do some night and/or astro photography.  A typical day might look like this:

 

Breakfast to-go

Sunrise Field Session and morning shoot

 

Group Lunch at our cabin

free time to download or nap

 

Afternoon shoot and sunset outing

Group Dinner

 

Astro photography session or photo sharing at the cabin

 

Monday, September 26th:  Departure

Participants depart lodging by 10am

 

 

Location and Accomodation:

This is a remote area, near the small town of Ontonagon.

Participants will stay in one of two Private Homes on wooded property along the shores of Lake Superior, each is 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom.

 

The base price is for single occupancy, each participant will have their own room.  The rooms vary, they will be assigned by random drawing.

 

Two bedrooms have two beds, there is a discount for double occupancy in these rooms.  If you are interested in double occupancy, please contact nick@chicagophotoclasses.com and he will supply you with a discount code.

 

 

Meals and Transportation:

Relax and immerse yourself in nature and photography.  Meals will be prepared by a chef and are included from dinner on arrival to breakfast on departure.  We will have two vehicles to transport participants to our field locations.

Equipment:

Bring your favorite DSLR or mirrorless camera, lenses and a tripod.  A cable release or remote shutter release is recommended.  Lens filters (polarizing filter and Neutral Density filters) are not mandatory, but instruction will be provided for those who bring them.

 

Need to Know:

The weather can be variable at this time of year.   This is an outdoor photo retreat, participants should arrive at the workshop prepared to go out in all weather conditions and temperatures.

This is an outdoor adventure, it will include some longer and more difficult hikes.  Participants should be prepared to hike every day.  We will endeavor to mix-up how strenuous each day’s activity will be.  If the weather cooperates, we will include night time photography outings.
